Las week The Times of India in its Mumbai edition published a derogatory news item aimed at the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran Ayatollah Khamenei (RA). The Consulate General of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Mumbai objected to the publication of the baseless and fabricated news.
Also, a group of Shia Ulemas presented a Memorandum to the TOI voicing their resentments against such publication.
On Thursday, 07th January 2010 the newspaper published the following clarification on the same page where it has published the false news item:
“The Times of India regrets carrying an agency news item on January 1 on the Times Global page which contained statements made by an unnamed defector about Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of Iran. Representatives of Shia group have objected to report and the Consulate General of the Islamic Republic of Iran (Mumbai) has called the report “baseless and fabricated”. The Times of Idnia sincerely regrets hurting the sentiments of anyone offended by the report.”
